Spreading Germs Is Out. Handwashing Is In!
You can’t remind people enough of the importance of handwashing. That simple act can be huge in preventing germs and disease.
On the official US government’s Centers For Disease Control (CDC) webpage on handwashing, the CDC is clear on how vital handwashing is.
“Keeping hands clean through improved hand hygiene is one of the most important steps we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. Many diseases and conditions are spread by not washing hands with soap and clean, running water.”
This goes beyond public places and schools, however. The CDC says, “Handwashing gives people the opportunity to take an active role in their own health. Most handwashing studies have focused on child care or health care settings. The few that have looked at corporate settings show that promoting clean hands results in fewer employee sick days.” It is easy to realize that handwashing is also key in the workplace to ensure health and productivity.
The CDC goes on to say that “Despite widespread knowledge of the importance of handwashing, there is still room for improvement. A recent study showed that only 31% of men and 65% of women washed their hands after using a public restroom.”
You might not expect numbers like that, but it’s true. In the past, we’ve mentioned a similar study by Michigan State University, which discovered that only around 5% of the people studied were properly washing their hands. (The majority of the people studied washed their hands less than the CDC recommended twenty seconds, or did not even wash their hands at all!)
How do you improve those stats for your organization? The first step is make sure people are informed and reminded on a regular basis. The Michigan State University study found that “people were more likely to wash their hands if a sign encouraging them to do so was present.”
