Tips For Keeping Public Restrooms Clean

We all want to keep a good image by keeping public restroom clean, but there can be a real health benefit as well. Rosie D. Lyles, MD, head of clinical affairs for Clorox, wrote an article in trade publication Cleaning & Maintenance Management about the importance of cleanliness in public restrooms.

She writes about the risk of so-called “superbugs” – organisms that are resistant to drug treatment, and says that “there is a growing body of research that shows that many of these microbes are commonly found in public restrooms.”

Here are some tips she offers to keep public restrooms clean and free of germs:

Pre-Clean Surfaces

Wipe away obvious debris like toilet paper and excrement off of surfaces before using heavy-duty disinfectant.

Follow the Instructions

Don’t just spray the nearest disinfectant bottle within reach, however. Take a look at the label, and use the appropriate chemical cleaner at the right time. Lyles notes that “different products have different contact times for killing certain pathogens.”

Don’t Forget the Floors

According to Lyles, one study found that “restroom floors are often germ hot spots with about 230 bacterial species, compared to 150 species in other restroom locations.”

Clean Mirrors and Glass

Use cleaners on mirrors and sinks to remove both unseemly stains and potential germs.

Encourage Hand Washing

We’ve mentioned before on our blog that handwashing does not happen as often as you’d expect, and Lyles reminds readers that “handwashing is an important part of preventing the spread of infections.”
