Here’s an extra unexpected discovery that you would think it’s a no-brainer- In other research, the CDC has found that many food-related infections could be prevented simply by more frequent hand-washing by food prep employees (along, of course, with wearing protective gloves).
Consistent hand-washing, according to the CDC, also has the potential to reduce “respiratory illnesses, like colds, in the general population by 16-21%.”

Here are some additional tips to avoid germs at restaurants besides washing your hands.
In the online publication Infection Control Tips, they note that another commonly overlooked way to reduce infection risk is to clean plastic menus, which are touched by nearly every customer, but are not often properly disinfected.
Another suggestion they offer is to hold finger-food in a wrapper or napkin. Finger-foods, of course, involve direct contact with hands, and that always brings some risk of carrying germs.
